Strong to Serve has a set of criteria that orphanages must meet to ensure fiduciary responsibility for the donated funds. Criteria include the following: proper official standing as an orphanage in the country of operation, proven "track" record of financial integrity and accountability, proper care of orphans, and an operational structure that is in line with Strong to Serve's mission and values.
Strong to Serve is a slim organization with a fully non-paid volunteering force. Its fixed costs are minimal so that the majority of donations can reach its intended recipients. Strong to Serve's target is to have 90-95% of all raised fund reach its intended beneficiaries through direct good and services.
Strong to Serve was incorporated as a non-for-profit organization in the State of New York in August 2010. It is organized exclusively for charitable purposes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Strong to Serve was started by a group of young professionals who wanted to challenge themselves by participating in athletic activities and by making a difference in the social plight of orphans in the developing world. This group is driven by a sense of social responsibility for the distress and suffering of defenseless orphans around the world. Its goal is to encourage people to become physically active while contributing to the needs of orphans in the developing world.
You can help by participating as a volunteering athlete, an event volunteer, or by donating on behalf of the organization. You can volunteer in our local fund raising activities. Visit our website at http://www.strongtoserve.org/Volunteers.php to learn about ways to volunteer. We would love to have you become a part of our team and train, give, and serve on behalf of orphans!
There's no specific restriction on the type of athletic events that volunteers can participate in. Most popular events include running (5K's, 10K's, half-marathons, and marathons), biking and swimming (triathlons), and obstacle and endurance courses (i.e. Warrior Dash, Tough Mudder, etc.).
No prior experience is required to run a race! We believe that everyone has the potential to become an athlete. Part of the personal challenge is to take on new physical goals, train to accomplish them, and give and serve orphans in the process. The learning phase on how to train for the specific events is exciting and rewarding, and leads to personal growth while helping meet the needs of orphans worldwide.
Strong to Serve is in the process of applying for federal tax status. We expect to gain tax-exempt status by March 2013. All donations prior to this date qualify retroactively for tax exempt status. Strong to Serve is a NY state tax-exempt non-for-profit organization since its inception.
